Their story
Running a bar in Spain is a far cry from Keith Garner being a joiner and his wife Sheila working in a call centre but despite the career change, with the help of their daughter Lyndsey (20), they have made a success of it. Originally from Hull, Keith and Sheila first discussed moving to Spain three years ago but it was 12 months ago when they began to search the internet, seriously looking for a business in Spain.
The house went on the market and sold quickly so the race was on. They came across Fiesta Property who flew them over to Spain to search for the right bar. Within a few days they fell in love with the Flamingo Bar in Torreblanca and put down a deposit. 30 days later they found themselves saying goodbye to family and heading for a new life in Spain.
'This was the hardest day of our lives', says Sheila, 'Saying goodbye to our grandchildren'.
The enterprising family soon settled in but found it hard to start with.
'It's difficult to adjust to the new lifestyle', said Keith, 'and it took a while to source the best suppliers; we still find it hard to accept the way things are done in Spain, especially the official side of things'.
The bar already had an established trade which certainly helped and it didn't take long for the regulars to accept the new owners. Lyndsey works hard in the bar too, helping to prepare meals in the kitchen and serving behind the bar and on the terrace.
'It does get easier', says Sheila, 'we still have our moments but we lean on each other for support'.
When asked if they have any regrets, Sheila simply says, 'No but it is not what we expected and we simply have to accept the long hours and different lifestyle'.
